Valverde Country Hotel and Conferencing Facility, located half an hour from Johannesburg, aims to reduce its carbon footprint by greening its menus, accommodation, wedding and conferencing offerings.

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, owners, Joaquin and Pamina Valverde, have introduced a recycling programme for paper, glass, tin and kitchen waste. Water-saving devices such as low-flow showerheads and toilet flush diverters have also been installed in the hotel’s bathrooms.

Says Joaquin Valverde: “Besides all the infrastructural adjustments, we also buy as many of the ingredients as possible that we use in our kitchen from local producers, some of which have embraced organic farming methods. In that way we know that our suppliers emit less carbon emissions through the transportation of the produce while encouraging local farming.”

The hotel has begun an education programme for staff on the importance of green initiatives and hopes companies committed to reducing their own carbon footprint will consider it as a conferencing destination of choice.
