Environmental pundits have had some concerns quelled with the announcement that a highway that is planned to cut across the world-famous Serengeti in Tanzania will remain unpaved.
Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, said a 50km planned stretch of road across the famous Serengeti National Park would not be paved to allow the natural passage of wildlife from various corners of the park to the other sides, including the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.
After much criticism from wildlife experts about the effect of the planned tarmac road on wildlife migration patterns, the Tanzanian government reversed a decision to pave the road and has instead offered this “environmentally friendly solution”.
The road is seen as necessary for the Tanzanian government to facilitate better trade to the Lake Victoria region. It has also been lauded as beneficial for tourism as it will reduce travelling times for road transfers in the region.
