The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) recently partnered with two local schools to offset its flight carbon footprint. The centre planted 58 trees to offset short-haul flights taken by management since the beginning of 2010.
According to CTICC, ceo Rashid Toefy, the decision to offset its flight carbon footprint is in line with the centre’s Nurture Our World (NOW) initiative, which aims to address issues like climate change and conservation.
To raise awareness around the importance of hosting sustainable meetings and events, the CTICC launched its ‘My Tree in Africa’ initiative last year. In collaboration with Food and Trees for Africa it aims to encourage conference delegates to offset their carbon footprint by purchasing trees. These trees are then planted in underprivileged areas at schools, clinics and public recreational areas in Cape Town.
Toefy said the tree planting initiative formed part of the centre’s Corporate Social Responsibility drive. CTICC staff worked with the learners to plant trees at the Ruyterwacht Preparatory and De Waveren Primary in Ruyterwacht.
De Waveren Primary’s school principal, Mr Von Tonder, said: “The school is greatly appreciative of the generosity shown by the CTICC in their efforts to preserve the environment and promote sustainability in the local community.”
