Arrivals statistics released this week by Statistics SA indicate a variety of results across the country’s core markets, with increases and decreases of varying degrees across the board.
Total arrivals for the country increased by a healthy 12,6% for August 2010 with a final result of 719 020 travellers entering the country in comparison to 638 572 in August 2009. Total overseas arrivals grew by 18,1% from 152 187 to 179 658, while total African arrivals also showed a spike of 11,2% from 482 967 to 537 034.
Traditional European markets held their resolve over the period with only the Dutch market showing quite a serious decline. The UK market showed strong growth over the period as South Africa’s biggest overseas market.
USA showed enormous growth for the month (35,2%) considering the large base number it is working off. Asian markets also continue to show promise, with China growing by over 100% for August. Australia also showed a sharp increase over the month.
African markets also continued their upward trend, except for Botswana which showed a slight decline in numbers for the month.
The top overseas markets for August 2010 were as follows:
- UK, up 11,2% from 30 628 to 34 068
- USA, up 35,2% from 20 996 to 28 351
- Germany, up 12,5% from 12 838 to 14 445
- France, up 3,9% from 10 084 to 10 478
- Italy, down 2,3% from 10 076 to 9 848
- Australia, up 41,7% from 6 593 to 9 344
- The Netherlands, down 15,7% from 9 453 to 7 968
- India, up 47,4% from 4 405 to 6 506
- China, up 105,1% from 2 887 to 5 921
- Spain, up 4% from 4 275 to 4 445
The top African markets for August 2010 were as follows:
- Zimbabwe, up 3,9% from 138 626 to 144 027
- Mozambique, up 14% from 84 949 to 96 852
- Lesotho, up 43,2% from 86 895 to 124 462
- Swaziland, up 0,5% from 64 137 to 64 484
- Botswana, down 6,4% from 42 254 to 39 541
