Tourists visiting Cape Town have been advised to be alert following reports of scams involving fraudulent card devices targeting visitors in popular tourist areas.

Scammers have been posing as officials or parking attendants to trick tourists into handing over their bank cards or entering their PINs.

Freedom Front Plus Councillor Emre Uygun says tourists are increasingly targeted in Simon’s Town where fake card machines are stuck onto walls by scammers.

In another incident at the Lion’s Head parking area on October 6, Uygun says two tourists were approached by three men. One was reportedly wearing a South African badge. The men produced a card machine and claimed that payment was required for parking before leaving with the tourists’ bank cards.
